The “Burggrafenamt” is even today used to describe the wonderful area in and around Meran. Its name derives, not from the city’s many castles (“Burgen”) and fortified houses, but from the fact that the area of Meran was once ruled directly by the Counts (“burgraves”) of Tyrol.
Today people speak more and more of the Meraner Land, referring also the inexhaustible variety of holiday opportunities in Meran. Spend some hours hiking in the mountains around Meran, then stroll around the City of Meran and then perhaps enjoy one of the many marvellous evening events in Meran.
But spring in Meran will also astonish you. The snow-covered 3,000-metre peaks surround a sea of blossoms in the valley. Meran lies as if in a bowl, offering a symbiosis of palms and glaciers, with a particularly beneficial climate and pleasant temperatures thanks to the high mountains that protect it from the northern winds. The Hotel Wessobrunn gives you a wonderful panorama over the the Meraner Land and Meran.
